Herman Melville
1819 - 1891

An American novelist, short story writer, and poet. He went to sea in 1839 as an ordinary sailor in the merchant navy. Later he worked on the whaler Acushnet. He jumped ship in the Marquesas Islands, and eventually returned home to write up his adventures.
